Summary
Book cover of Tuesdays with Morrie.
In the beginning of the novel, Mitch Albom recalls his graduation from Brandeis University in 1979. He is greeted by Morrie Schwartz, his favorite teacher. Mitch hands Morrie an initialed briefcase as they hug. Morrie begins to cry and Mitch reassures him that they will keep in touch. From that day, Mitch has yet to visit Morrie. He is married now and works as a newspaper reporter; but his work is starting to consume his life. Mitch’s occupation keeps him extremely busy, as it forces him to use most of his time on travel and work.
The story continues sixteen years later after Mitch’s graduation and we learn of Morrie’s diagnosis of the debilitating disease, ALS. Since the disease, Morrie began writing about his experience with death. A friend of his, enthralled with his writing, refers him to a reporter who then writes a story about Morrie. One of the producers of “Nightline” features the story on the show. By chance, Mitch watches the episode and instantly recalls Morrie. Mitch immediately contacts Morrie and schedules a meeting.
From that day on, Mitch and Morrie stay in touch and on every Tuesday they meet. They discuss about many different aspects of life such as death, love, and the world. Morrie shares his philosophies with Mitch and throughout their conversations Mitch records and takes notes. Mitch also begins to recall all the past memories he had with Morrie in Brandeis University. With each passing Tuesday, Morrie’s health continuously gets worse; but his stories never do. Mitch begins to learn more about the meaning of life through Morrie’s eyes and starts to reform his past mentality of the world as well.
